From Bobo-Dioulasso to Shakhtar Donetsk: the rise of Lassina Traoré
In short: Born in Burkina Faso, Lassina Traoré’s journey to European football involved a strategic detour through South Africa. After honing his skills in the youth ranks of Rahimo, he navigated complex international transfer laws to eventually become a key figure in the Ukrainian Premier League.
Lassina Traoré's professional trajectory is a testament to the globalized nature of modern football scouting. Born on 12 January 2001 in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, Traoré began his development at the youth academy of Rahimo. His talent caught the attention of Ajax, but his path to Amsterdam was not direct. Due to age-related transfer restrictions, he was first sent to Ajax's satellite club, Ajax Cape Town, in South Africa to develop until he was legally eligible to move to the Netherlands.
Traoré's arrival in Europe was marked by significant milestones. In January 2019, shortly after his 18th birthday, he signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Ajax. His impact was felt almost immediately; on 24 October 2020, he delivered a historic performance, scoring five goals and providing three assists in a 13–0 victory over VVV-Venlo. This feat earned him the Eredivisie Player of the Month title for October 2020.
His success in the Dutch league paved the way for a major move to the Ukrainian Premier League. On 18 June 2021, Shakhtar Donetsk announced his transfer for a fee of €10 million. He has since become a vital part of the squad, notably scoring twice in a 3–0 victory against Dynamo Kyiv during the 2021 Ukrainian Super Cup. His commitment to the club was further solidified on 19 May 2026, when he signed a contract extension running until 30 June 2031.
Standing 1.83 m tall, Traoré is noted for a physical playing style that complements his technical competence, distinguishing him from a standard 'target man'. His footballing lineage is significant: his mother was a former professional footballer and captain of the Burkina Faso women's national team, and his cousin, Bertrand Traoré, has also played professionally, most recently for Sunderland.
