How engineers use magnets, hydraulics, and air to launch roller coasters at record speeds
In short: Traditional roller coasters rely on gravity to build momentum, but launched coasters use high-tech propulsion to reach top speeds in seconds. From electromagnetic motors to massive hydraulic pumps, these systems transform how riders experience acceleration, turning a simple track into a high-powered machine capable of defying conventional coaster design.
Launched roller coasters initiate rides using external energy sources rather than gravity. These systems employ various mechanisms, including linear induction motors (LIM), linear synchronous motors (LSM), hydraulic power, and compressed air. Electromagnetic systems like LIM and LSM utilize large amounts of electricity to propel trains through ride elements. In contrast, hydraulic launches, pioneered by Intamin, use powerful pumps to compress nitrogen in accumulators. When released, this energy drives a winch that pulls a catch-car attached to the train, providing intense, smooth acceleration.
The power behind these systems is immense. A hydraulic launch configuration can generate a peak power of 20,800 horsepower, as seen in Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure. This coaster reaches 128 mph in 3.5 seconds. Even faster is Formula Rossa, which hits 149 mph in 4 seconds using the hydraulic method. Pneumatic systems, which use compressed air, also provide significant force; the Do-Dodonpa coaster at Fuji-Q Highland previously held an acceleration record, launching from 0 to 112 mph in just 1.56 seconds.
Designers often incorporate specific elements to complement these launches. Intamin’s Accelerator Coasters frequently feature a top hat, a tower-shaped hill with a 90-degree ascent and drop. Other methods include flywheel launches, which store energy in spinning discs, and friction wheels that use horizontal tires to pinch the train. While electromagnetic launches provide constant acceleration throughout the launch phase, hydraulic systems offer a burst of power that fades rapidly. These diverse technologies allow engineers to push the boundaries of speed and layout, creating experiences that range from record-breaking velocity to complex, multi-launch journeys.
