In short: Laurent-Désiré Kabila spent decades as a rebel leader, gold smuggler, and bar proprietor in Tanzania before seizing power in the Congo. Once hailed as a new breed of African leader, his brief, tumultuous presidency ended in a mysterious assassination that remains a subject of intense historical debate and suspicion.

Born in 1939, Kabila spent years on the fringes of power, leading a Marxist-aligned rebellion in eastern Congo from 1967 until 1986. During this period, he operated from the Fizi-Baraka region and later engaged in gold and timber smuggling. His early career included a brief, strained collaboration with Che Guevara in 1965. Guevara famously judged the 26-year-old Kabila as lacking the discipline and seriousness required for a true revolutionary, noting that he often preferred local nightlife to military training.

Kabila’s path to the presidency began in the mid-1990s when he was recruited by Ugandan and Rwandan officials to provide a local face for their intervention in Zaire. He became the public leader of a coalition of political exiles formed in October 1996. By May 1997, his forces had successfully toppled the long-standing regime of Mobutu Sese Seko. Kabila immediately renamed the nation the Democratic Republic of the Congo and suspended the constitution, promising a transition to order that critics argued quickly devolved into authoritarianism and corruption.

His presidency was short-lived. By 1998, his former foreign allies had turned against him, sparking the Second Congo War. In January 2001, Kabila was shot in his office. While the government claimed he died later in Zimbabwe to facilitate a smooth succession to his son, Joseph Kabila, others believe he died instantly. The subsequent trial of 135 individuals, including his cousin Eddy Kapend, was widely criticized as flawed. In 2021, all those convicted in the assassination were pardoned, leaving the true circumstances of his death shrouded in lingering uncertainty.
