From liquidation to Ligue 1: the dramatic resurgence of Le Mans FC
In short: After facing liquidation and being relegated due to pandemic-related decisions, Le Mans FC has staged a remarkable comeback. Following a period of amateur football, the club has recently secured successive promotions, returning to the top tier of French football through a high-profile ownership group.
The history of professional football in Le Mans is a complex tapestry of mergers and rebirths. Le Mans FC, the present club, originated on 12 June 1985 when Union Sportive du Mans and Le Mans Sports Club merged. While the club's roots trace back to 1900, it has faced significant volatility. In the 2010–11 season, the club moved to the MMArena but missed promotion on goal difference, leading to financial restrictions by the DNCG. This instability culminated in the club being liquidated and forced to reform as an amateur club in the Maine province's Division d'Honneur.
The club's path back to prominence was marked by a steady climb through the French divisions. After several attempts, they achieved promotion to the Championnat National 2 in 2016–17, followed by consecutive promotions that saw them return to Ligue 2 after overcoming Gazélec Ajaccio in a relegation play-off final. Following the premature end of the 2019–20 Ligue 2 season caused by COVID-19, the FFF issued a disputed ruling on 27 May 2020 to relegate them to Championnat National.
A new era began with a significant shift in ownership. Novak Djokovic, the tennis star, entered into co-ownership in August 2025 through the OutField Brazilian consortium, alongside Georgios Frangulis, Kevin Magnussen, and Felipe Massa. The group expanded in February 2026 when Thibaut Courtois joined through his company, NxtPlay. This momentum carried the club to the top flight, securing promotion to Ligue 1 on 10 May 2026 with a 2–0 victory over Bastia, ending a seventeen-year absence from the first tier.
