In short: The 87th edition of France's second-tier football league, Ligue 2, concluded a dramatic 2025–26 campaign defined by unexpected relegations, financial instability, and high-stakes promotion battles. From the administrative exclusion of historic clubs to the return of teams absent for decades, the season showcased the intense volatility inherent in professional football structures.

The 2025–26 season, known as Ligue 2 BKT, spanned from 9 August 2025 to 8 May 2026. This year was marked by significant movement between divisions, driven by both on-field performance and off-field administrative decisions. FC Lorient and Paris FC secured promotion to Ligue 1 after spending one and seven years in the second tier, respectively. Meanwhile, Metz earned their spot in the top flight after defeating Reims in the promotion/relegation play-offs, ending Reims' seven-year tenure in the top division.

The league also saw the return of several clubs from the Championnat National. Nancy, Le Mans, and Boulogne rejoined the second tier after absences of three, five, and thirteen years, respectively. Conversely, the league faced departures due to relegation and financial crises. Caen dropped to the Championnat National after six years in Ligue 2, marking their first appearance in the third tier since 1984. Martigues faced a more severe fate, being excluded to the sixth-tier Régional 1, ending a 55-year run in professional or higher-level football. AC Ajaccio was also relegated to the Championnat National on 16 July 2025 due to financial difficulties, ending a 27-year stint in higher divisions.

Administrative drama nearly altered the league's composition before the season began. On 23 June 2025, Lyon was administratively relegated from Ligue 1, which would have saved Reims from their own relegation. However, this decision was overturned on appeal on 9 July 2025, maintaining the status quo. The season concluded with complex play-off structures: Nice retained their Ligue 1 spot by defeating a challenger 4–1 on aggregate, while Laval successfully defended their position against a National league opponent with a 2–1 aggregate victory. These outcomes highlight the precarious nature of league status, where financial health and regulatory compliance are as critical as performance on the pitch.
