In short: Leatherhead F.C., known as The Tanners, rose from humble Surrey roots to become a national sensation. In 1975, this semi-professional side nearly pulled off one of the greatest FA Cup upsets in history, pushing a top-flight giant to the brink before a crowd of over 32,000 spectators.

Formed on 27 May 1946 following the merger of two local clubs, Leatherhead Football Club established its home at Fetcham Grove. The club quickly built a reputation for success, winning the Surrey Senior League four consecutive times between 1946 and 1950. By the 1970s, the team had become a formidable force in amateur and semi-professional football, reaching the FA Amateur Cup semi-finals in both 1969 and 1971.

The club's defining moment arrived during the 1974–75 FA Cup. After defeating professional Football League sides Colchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion, The Tanners reached the Fourth Round to face First Division Leicester City. The match, moved to Leicester's Filbert Street, saw Leatherhead take a shock 2–0 lead. Though Leicester eventually won 3–2, the performance cemented the club's legend. Star player Chris Kelly, nicknamed 'The Leatherhead Lip' for his charismatic media presence, became a household name, appearing on national television programs like Match of the Day.

Beyond the pitch, the club has endured significant challenges. Financial instability nearly destroyed the team in 2000, but a dedicated group of supporters intervened to secure a long-term lease on Fetcham Grove. Guided by the principle of being a club run by its supporters for the community, they ensured the team's survival. Today, Leatherhead continues to compete in the Isthmian League, maintaining its identity as a community-focused institution that has survived both financial crises and the shifting tides of English football.
