The rare baseball franchises to conquer both American and National leagues
In short: In the complex geography of Major League Baseball, most teams are bound by league borders. However, two specific franchises have defied this geographic destiny, becoming the only ones in history to compete for championships in both the American and National Leagues.
The League Championship Series (LCS) serves as the semifinal round of MLB postseason play, determining which team from each league advances to the World Series. Since its inception in 1969, the LCS has been a primary vehicle for crowning league champions and awarding the William Harridge Trophy (American League) and the Warren C. Giles Trophy (National League). Before this era, league winners were typically decided by regular season win-loss records, occasionally necessitating unofficial tiebreaker contests.
While most teams remain loyal to one league, the Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros stand as unique historical outliers. The Brewers competed in the American League from 1969 until 1997, while the Astros remained in the National League from 1962 until 2012. This migration makes them the only two franchises to have participated in both the ALCS and NLCS. Notably, the Houston Astros achieved a rare feat of versatility by winning an NLCS in 2005 and subsequently securing four ALCS titles between 2017 and 2022.
The structure of these series has evolved significantly to balance fairness and home-field advantage. For its first 16 seasons, the LCS used a best-of-five format where the disadvantaged team hosted the first two games. In 1985, this shifted to a best-of-seven, 2–3–2 format. Since 1998, home-field advantage has generally been awarded to the team with the superior regular season record, unless a division champion faces a wild card team, in which case the champion retains the advantage regardless of record.
