In short: In 1945, the city of Gdańsk was a landscape of destruction. From this wreckage, a sports club emerged—not just to play a game, but to preserve a cultural identity. It is a story of refugees, reconstruction, and a resilient sporting legacy that survived the collapse of empires.

Lechia Gdańsk was founded on August 7, 1945, by workers of the Port Reconstruction Office (BOP). The BOP was tasked with rebuilding Polish sea ports destroyed during World War II. Initially named BOP Baltia Gdańsk, the club served as a recreational outlet for workers rebuilding the nation's infrastructure. The club's heritage was tied to history, as numerous students and employees of the Gdańsk University of Technology were forced out of Lwów following the war's conclusion. They brought with them a devotion to Lechia Lwów, Poland's oldest football team (founded in 1903). To honor this heritage, the club adopted the name 'Lechia,' a poetic term for Poland.

The club's early years were defined by a rapid ascent and a struggle for stability. After winning a regional qualifying series in 1945—including two 'Gdańsk Derbies' against Gedania—they were promoted to the second division. By 1949, they reached the top flight for the first time. This era was marked by extreme volatility; they finished bottom of the league in their debut top-flight season, only to return via a promotion playoff in 1948. The late 1950s are remembered as the 'golden years,' where under manager Tadeusz Foryś, the team became the first post-war club to reach the podium, finishing 3rd in 1956 by relying on a formidable defense that kept 10 clean sheets.

The club's history is also one of dramatic falls. After a nine-season spell in the top division, they were relegated in 1963. During the 1966–67 period, a sequence of eight matches without a victory caused the side to fall into the third division for the first time ever. Despite these fluctuations, the club remains a cornerstone of Polish football, recently experiencing a modern resurgence by finishing third in the league in 2019 before a relegation in 2023.
