In short: Established in 1873, Gainsborough Trinity remains one of the smallest towns to ever compete in the English Football League. Despite their departure from the professional ranks in 1912, the club has maintained a resilient identity, balancing historic local rivalries with persistent, occasionally spectacular, runs in the FA Cup.

Founded as Trinity Recreationists by the Reverend George Langton Hodgkinson, the club quickly rose through the ranks of the Midland League. By 1896, they secured election to the Football League's Second Division. For sixteen years, this small Lincolnshire side competed against much larger urban clubs. Their tenure was defined by a gradual struggle for form; while they achieved a respectable sixth-place finish in 1904–05, they frequently occupied the bottom half of the table. Their professional era concluded in 1912 when they failed to secure re-election, receiving only nine votes compared to the twenty-seven garnered by Lincoln City.

Following their exit from the Football League, the club became a stalwart of the non-League circuit, winning four Midland League titles between 1890 and 1967. Throughout the 20th century, Trinity maintained a reputation as giant-killers in the FA Cup. They famously defeated Football League opponents like Crewe Alexandra and Gateshead, and in 1948, they drew a record crowd of 9,760 spectators for a match against Scunthorpe United. Their home ground, the Northolme, has served as the club's base since 1884, though they occasionally utilized other venues like Sincil Bank when cricket matches occupied their primary pitch.

The modern era has seen the club navigate the complexities of the pyramid system, including a stint as founder members of the Conference North in 2004. Despite a historic relegation in 2018, the club continues to compete in the Northern Premier League. Their location on the banks of the River Trent keeps them firmly rooted in regional traditions, with intense Boxing Day derbies against Boston United and Worksop Town. Recent years have provided flashes of their former giant-killing spirit, including a 2024–25 FA Cup run that saw them reach the second round for the first time in over seven decades.
