From clandestine wartime matches to Poland's top football league: the rise of Wieczysta Kraków
In short: Founded in secret during the Nazi occupation of Poland, Wieczysta Kraków spent decades in the lower tiers of the national league system. However, a massive influx of private investment in 2020 transformed the club, fueling a meteoric rise that saw them climb from regional play to the Ekstraklasa in just six years.
The origins of Wieczysta Kraków are rooted in defiance. During the Nazi occupation, organized sports were strictly forbidden for Poles. To bypass these restrictions, local residents began holding clandestine football matches on the meadows of Rakowice, a village on the outskirts of Kraków. In 1942, acting on the initiative of Edward Ignaszewski, the community formalized these gatherings by establishing the club. For the remainder of the 20th century, the team largely operated within the regional levels of the Polish league system, experiencing periods of stabilization alongside occasional relegations to the fifth or sixth tiers.
The club's trajectory changed dramatically in June 2020 when businessman Wojciech Kwiecień became the owner. His arrival brought substantial financial resources, allowing the club to recruit high-profile coaches and players from higher divisions. By 2021, Wieczysta was recognized as the wealthiest amateur club in Poland. Their dominance was immediate; they secured promotion to the IV liga with a perfect record of 28 wins in 28 games, scoring 216 goals while conceding only eight. This momentum carried them through the league system, including a pivotal 2022 victory over the reserves of Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza to reach the III liga.
The final push toward the top flight was marked by rapid, consecutive promotions. After securing a spot in the II liga in May 2024, the club continued its ascent. By the end of the 2025–26 season, Wieczysta finished third in the I liga and entered the promotion play-offs. Following a semi-final victory against Polonia Warsaw, they defeated Chrobry Głogów 2–1 on 31 May 2026. This victory earned the club its first-ever promotion to the Ekstraklasa, the highest tier of Polish football, marking a remarkable transformation for a team that had been competing in regional amateur leagues just a few years prior.
