The Malaysian smash specialist who rose from a sports school to Olympic glory
In short: Known for his devastating backhand smash and extreme physical agility, Lee Zii Jia has become a defining figure in men's singles badminton. From his early training in Kedah to a historic bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics, his career is a testament to speed, reflexes, and resilience.
Born in Alor Setar, Kedah, to two former basketball internationals, Lee was introduced to badminton at age six. His talent was evident early; after standout performances in under-12 competitions, he was drafted into the Bukit Jalil Sports School. By 2015, he was already a junior champion in the Perak and Selangor Badminton Open.
Winning the 2021 All England Open, his first BWF Super 1000 trophy, signalled Lee's rise to the top. Major victories for him include the 2022 Thailand Open and the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships. His career has also seen intense periods of transition, including a brief, controversial ban in 2022 after resigning from the Badminton Association of Malaysia, a decision that was lifted after a meeting with the association.
His greatest success so far involves claiming a bronze medal during the 2024 Summer Olympics men's singles. This feat makes him only the third Malaysian men's singles player to win an Olympic medal, following in the footsteps of Rashid Sidek and Lee Chong Wei. More than just an athlete, Lee is a global icon, notably as the premier Malaysian badminton star displayed on a New York Times Square digital billboard.
Despite his successes, Lee's career has been characterized by fluctuations in form and injury challenges. He has navigated various coaching changes, including parting ways with Indra Wijaya in 2021 and enlisting Wong Tat Meng in 2023, and has faced the psychological toll of dropping out of the world top 10, leading him to consider taking a break from professional competition.
