The rapid ascent of Indonesia's teenage badminton prodigy
In short: In the world of elite badminton, few athletes transition from junior dominance to senior podiums as swiftly as Zaki Ubaidillah. Born in 2007, he has already secured gold medals at the Asian Games and SEA Games, establishing himself as a cornerstone of Indonesia's national team.
The trajectory of Zaki Ubaidillah illustrates the high-pressure pipeline of Indonesian badminton. After first gaining national attention in 2022 by dominating the domestic circuit, Ubaidillah proved his consistency across multiple age brackets. He moved from the U17 category, where he won the Piala Presiden, to the U19 category in 2023, capturing titles in various regions including West Java, East Java, and Jakarta.
His international rise was marked by a series of high-stakes performances. As the top seed in the boys' singles at the Asia Junior Championships, he secured a gold medal by defeating Liu Yangmingyu in a straight game. However, the competitive nature of the sport was highlighted at the World Junior Championships in India, where Liu managed to avenge that victory, leaving Ubaidillah with a silver medal. These experiences served as a crucible for his leadership roles, including serving as co-captain at the Suhandinata Cup and captain at the Asia Junior Championships.
By 2025 and 2026, Ubaidillah transitioned into a vital role for the senior national squad. He contributed to a bronze medal at the 2025 Sudirman Cup and played a pivotal role in the 2025 SEA Games team gold. During the 2026 Asian Games, he won the gold medal point for Indonesia's male squad after beating China in the final match. This rapid progression from a junior standout to a senior gold medalist underscores the elite level of development within the Djarum club and the Indonesian national training system.
