In short: Imagine a world where your plastic bricks didn't just sit on a shelf, but performed in augmented reality music videos. Lego Vidiyo was a bold, short-lived experiment in digital play, blending physical construction with licensed music and social media mechanics for a generation of young creators.

Launched in March 2021, Lego Vidiyo was a strategic partnership between the Lego Group and Universal Music Group. The goal was to allow children aged 7 to 10 to create short music videos—up to twenty seconds long—by scanning physical sets and figures with a mobile app. The experience was designed to mirror the mechanics of TikTok, featuring a public feed where users could upload content, interact with emojis, and view moderated videos from other creators. The product line relied on a specific ecosystem of components. Users collected 'Bandmates' (minifigures themed after music genres) and 'BeatBits' (scannable tiles that triggered special effects). These effects were stored in 'BeatBoxes,' which served as buildable stages. To support the launch, Lego signed a record deal with the label Astralwerks, even releasing a single titled "Shake" featuring a virtual singer named L.L.A.M.A. This virtual character was specifically created for the line, appearing in ads alongside The Voice UK. Despite critical praise for its creativity—with reviewers from The Irish Times and Stuff giving it 4/5 stars—the theme faced a swift conclusion. In July 2021, Lego placed the line on hiatus to research improvements based on user feedback. By January 2022, the company officially discontinued the theme and its sets. The accompanying mobile app remained active for two additional years before being retired in January 2024. While the Lego Group noted the product tested well, the experience was ultimately deemed too limited in control for some, leading to its rapid exit from the market.
