From brewing refrigeration to global industrial gas dominance: the story of Linde plc
In short: Linde plc stands as the world's largest supplier of industrial gases, a position built on over a century of chemical engineering. From its origins in 1879 Germany to its current status as a multinational giant, the company has evolved through strategic mergers, wartime survival, and constant technological adaptation.
The company traces its roots to 1879, when Carl von Linde founded a business in Wiesbaden to advance mechanical refrigeration for the food and brewing sectors. His breakthrough came in 1895 with a patent for air liquefaction, which enabled the separation of gases on an industrial scale. By 1903, the first large-scale air separation plant was operational in Höllriegelskreuth, Germany. This technical foundation allowed the firm to expand rapidly, establishing its first American plant in Buffalo, New York, by 1907.
The 20th century brought significant upheaval and transformation. During the Second World War, the company was deeply integrated into the German armaments industry, producing equipment for rocket programs and engines. Notably, it provided oxygen and helium infrastructure for IG Farben at the Auschwitz concentration camp. By mid-1944, company records estimated that between 400 and 500 forced laborers were working in its facilities. Post-war, the company diversified into mechanical handling, including forklift manufacturing, before refocusing on its core gas and engineering expertise.
The modern iteration of the company emerged in 2018 through a merger with Praxair, a firm that had its own complex history as a former division of Union Carbide. Today, Linde plc operates globally, managing complex supply chains that deliver gases via pipelines, road tankers, and cylinders. Its engineering division remains a leader in plant construction, holding over 1,000 process engineering patents. While the company continues to invest in emerging technologies like hydrogen production, it also navigates geopolitical challenges, such as the freezing of its assets in Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
