In short: Liga Leumit serves as the second level of professional football in Israel, sitting just beneath the Premier League. While it once held the title of the nation's top division, it now functions as a competitive gateway, using a complex playoff system to determine promotion, relegation, and the future of its sixteen clubs.

Established at the dawn of the 1955–56 season, Liga Leumit originally stood as the pinnacle of Israeli football, effectively taking the place of the former Liga Alef. This hierarchy remained stable for decades until the 1999–2000 season, when the introduction of the Israeli Premier League shifted the structure. Since that transition, Liga Leumit has operated as the second tier within the national system.

The league currently consists of sixteen clubs that compete in a rigorous format. Teams first engage in a standard round-robin schedule consisting of thirty matches. Once this phase concludes, the league implements a distinctive rule where all accumulated points are halved. The competition then splits into two distinct groups: the top eight teams enter a promotion playoff to vie for spots in the Premier League, while the bottom eight teams battle to avoid relegation to Liga Alef.

Movement between divisions is strictly regulated. At the conclusion of each season, the two clubs finishing at the bottom of the Liga Leumit table are relegated, while the two top-performing teams from Liga Alef earn promotion. Simultaneously, the two highest-ranked teams in Liga Leumit ascend to the Premier League, replacing the two lowest-placed teams from that top flight. Beyond league standings, the competition has historical ties to broader European play, such as when State Cup winners earned entry into the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

The league has also evolved in its visibility. Since the 2010–11 season, fans have been able to watch select matches broadcast live on the Sport +5 LIVE channel during Friday or Saturday afternoons. While the name Liga Leumit is primarily associated with this football structure, it is worth noting that the term is also used to identify a separate basketball league in Israel.
