In short: Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is a paradox. While it lacks regular international passenger flights, it ranks among the world's busiest cargo hubs. This is thanks to UPS Worldport, a massive sorting facility that processes hundreds of thousands of packages every hour, anchoring the airport as a vital logistics artery.

Built in 1941 by the Army Corps of Engineers on flood-resistant land, the site was originally named Standiford Field after a local businessman. It served as a military facility until 1947, when it transitioned to commercial use, eventually replacing the downtown-adjacent Bowman Field. The airport underwent massive modernization in the 1980s and 1990s, including the construction of parallel runways and a new terminal, to accommodate the explosive growth of the United Parcel Service (UPS) hub.

The facility, officially branded Worldport in 2002, is a logistical titan. Spanning 5.2 million square feet, it acts as the primary global air hub for UPS. It is capable of sorting 416,000 packages per hour—or 115 per second—using advanced technology and a massive workforce of over 20,000 employees. This concentration of cargo traffic makes the airport the second-busiest in the United States and the fourth-busiest globally, trailing only major international hubs like Hong Kong and Shanghai.

In 2019, the airport was renamed to honor Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer and Louisville native. Today, the airport is undergoing a $1 billion renovation project known as SDF Next, aimed at upgrading the Jerry E. Abramson Terminal and enhancing passenger facilities. Despite the focus on cargo, the airport remains a critical piece of infrastructure, balancing its role as a high-volume industrial engine with its identity as a gateway to the city of Louisville.
