In short: Charlotte Douglas International Airport began as a Works Progress Administration project in 1935. Today, it stands as a critical fortress hub for American Airlines, processing over 50 million passengers annually. From its origins as a municipal airfield to its current multi-billion dollar expansion, the airport remains a masterclass in infrastructure evolution.

Established in 1935, Charlotte Municipal Airport was the largest single Works Progress Administration project in the United States. It initially featured a terminal, hangar, beacon tower, and three runways. By 1941, the United States Army Air Forces assumed control, renaming it Charlotte Air Base and later Morris Field, where it served as a hub for antisubmarine patrols and training until its return to the city in 1946.

The airport’s modern identity began to take shape in 1979, when Piedmont Airlines selected Charlotte as its primary hub. This shift triggered massive growth, leading to the 1982 opening of a new terminal and the renaming of the facility to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in honor of former Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr. Following the 2013 merger of US Airways and American Airlines, Charlotte solidified its status as the second-largest hub for the combined carrier.

Today, the airport is undergoing a $2.5 billion development program known as Destination CLT. This initiative includes extensive terminal renovations, the consolidation of security checkpoints, and the construction of a new 367-foot air traffic control tower—the second-tallest in the United States. Additionally, a $1 billion fourth parallel runway is currently under construction, with completion expected in 2027 to further increase capacity.

Beyond its physical expansion, the airport has integrated digital art and modern amenities to manage its massive traffic. Concourse A North features a massive digital display titled 'Interconnected' by Refik Anadol, which visualizes live aircraft movement data. As the airport looks toward 2037, plans for a light rail connection via the CATS LYNX Silver Line aim to further integrate the facility into the regional transit network.
