In short: While many view Indianapolis as a standard transit hub, its airport functions as a global logistics powerhouse. Beyond the passenger gates lies the world's second-largest FedEx Express hub, processing nearly 100,000 packages every single hour, driving a cargo throughput that keeps this facility among the top 10 busiest in the United States.

The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is far more than a regional gateway; it is a critical node in global commerce. While the airport serves over 50 non-stop destinations across North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, its true economic weight is found in its cargo operations. Since 1988, FedEx Express has maintained a massive hub here, employing approximately 4,000 people. This operation is so significant that only the Memphis SuperHub surpasses it in global cargo traffic, positioning IND consistently among the ten busiest U.S. airports for air cargo throughput.

The airport's infrastructure reflects a transition from a 1931 municipal airfield to a sophisticated, modern complex. The current Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal, which opened on November 12, 2008, was one of the first major U.S. terminals designed following the September 11 attacks. This $1.1 billion, 1.2-million-square-foot facility sits between two parallel runways and is part of a larger ecosystem that includes a 348-foot control tower—the second tallest in the U.S. and fourteenth tallest globally.

Sustainability and expansion are the current frontiers for the Indianapolis Airport Authority. The facility hosts a 22 MW solar farm containing 87,478 panels, which, as of late 2025, stands as the largest airport solar farm in the world. As the airport moves toward carbon neutrality, it is also expanding its ground footprint, including a $206 million Marriott Westin-branded hotel project that broke ground in June 2025. From its origins as a 320-acre site to its current 7,700-acre expanse, the airport continues to evolve through massive infrastructure investments, such as the $26.6 million FAA grant received in August 2024 for runway reconstruction.
