In short: Born in 1989 as a modest political demonstration for peace, the Love Parade grew into one of the world's largest electronic music festivals. It transformed Berlin's streets into a massive, bass-heavy spectacle before a tragic crowd crush in 2010 forced the event to shut its doors forever.

The Love Parade was founded in July 1989 by Matthias Roeingh, known as Dr. Motte, and his partner Danielle de Picciotto. Originally intended as a birthday celebration for Roeingh, it was framed as a political demonstration to bypass the high costs of security and cleanup required for commercial events. The motto, Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen, symbolized a vision of disarmament, joy through music, and fair food distribution. With only 150 participants at its inception, the event rapidly expanded, eventually drawing over a million attendees in its peak years between 1997 and 2000.

As the festival grew, it faced increasing scrutiny and logistical challenges. Initially held on Berlin's Kurfürstendamm, the parade moved to the Straße des 17. Juni in 1996 due to severe overcrowding. The event became famous for its sound trucks, which featured prominent DJs and clubs, and for the imaginative, often exhibitionist, attire of its participants. However, the parade's success led to friction with city authorities. Disputes over whether the event qualified as a political protest or a commercial venture persisted for years, with courts eventually ruling in 2001 that it must be treated as a commercial event, forcing organizers to cover significant security and maintenance costs.

The festival's trajectory shifted in 2007 when it moved to the Ruhr region. The end came abruptly on 24 July 2010, when a catastrophic crowd crush occurred at the Duisburg venue. The incident, which took place on an overcrowded ramp, resulted in the deaths of 21 people and left at least 500 others injured. Following the tragedy, organizer Rainer Schaller announced the permanent cancellation of the Love Parade, stating that the event would forever be overshadowed by the loss of life. While the original festival ceased, its influence persists through various global spin-offs and the Rave The Planet Parade, a spiritual successor founded by Dr. Motte in 2022.
