In short: For decades, the red and white shirts of Vicenza bore the R of a wool manufacturer, not a traditional sponsor. This unique corporate marriage transformed a local team into a Serie A powerhouse, launching the career of Paolo Rossi and securing a historic Coppa Italia victory before a dramatic 2018 rebirth.

Founded on 9 March 1902, the club originally known as ACIVI spent its early years establishing itself in northern Italy. By the 1950s, the team faced significant hurdles until a 1953 takeover by the Schio-based textile firm Lanerossi changed its trajectory. Unlike modern sponsorship deals, this was a direct corporate integration; the football club became an extension of the wool company, adopting its name and the iconic R logo. This era of financial stability allowed the team to thrive, culminating in a golden period between 1955 and 1975.

The club reached its zenith in the late 1970s under coach Giovan Battista Fabbri. By converting Paolo Rossi into a lethal centre forward, Vicenza achieved a second-place finish in the 1977–1978 Serie A season. This remains the highest league placement ever recorded by a team immediately following promotion to the top flight. However, the financial strain of securing Rossi's full ownership eventually triggered a decline, leading to years of instability, relegation, and a 1989 rebranding to Vicenza Calcio.

The 1990s brought a final flourish of success under Francesco Guidolin, who prioritized collective team dynamics over individual stars. This philosophy led to the club's most significant achievement: winning the 1996–1997 Coppa Italia. Shortly after, the club made history again by becoming the first Italian team under foreign ownership via the ENIC Group. Despite reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1998, the club eventually succumbed to mounting debts, leading to bankruptcy in 2018. It was saved when entrepreneur Renzo Rosso acquired the assets and merged them with his own club, Virtus Bassano, ensuring the survival of the historic Vicenza sporting tradition.

Today, the club operates as L.R. Vicenza, reclaiming its historical identity. While it has navigated the complexities of the Italian football pyramid—including financial crises and administrative restructuring—it remains a symbol of the city's sporting heritage. The legacy of players like Rossi and the memory of the Lanerossi era continue to define the club's identity for its supporters.
