The lost African metropolis that once rivaled the great towns of Europe
In short: Long before modern borders, a massive mountain city served as the heart of the Kingdom of Kongo. At its peak, this sprawling capital was perhaps the largest urban center in sub-equatorial Africa, featuring stone palaces, twelve churches, and a complex web of international trade.
Founded by the first manikongo, Lukeni, at a vital junction of trade routes, M'banza Kongo was the seat of power for the Kingdom of Kongo from its inception until the kingdom's abolition in 1915. The city's strategic importance was recognized by early European explorers; Portuguese travelers reaching the site in 1491 had journeyed ten days from the Congo River mouth. By the 1550s, the city was a cosmopolitan hub, hosting Portuguese traders and Jesuit missionaries.
The city's scale was immense. During the 1620s, an ecclesiastical record noted 4,5 and 00 baptisms in the city and its surrounding parish, suggesting a total population of roughly 130,000 people. While the nuclear city atop the mountain held an estimated 30,000 to 45,000 residents, the rest of the population lived in smaller villages within a 30-kilometre radius. Visitors like Giovanni Francesco da Roma noted in 1648 that the royal grounds featured an impressive two-story palace, a rarity in the region.
The city's history is marked by both grandeur and upheaval. It survived the 1568 invasion by the Jagas, which saw King Alvaro I driven from his capital, and endured periods of abandonment during the 17th-century civil wars following the Battle of Mbwila in 1665. Today, M'banza Kongo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving ruins such as the 16th-century Cathedral of the Holy Saviour of Congo. It remains a site of deep legend, from the 'mountain of division' where clans were allegedly created, to the 'judgement tree' where the manikongo once presided.
Though its name shifted from São Salvador back to Mbanza Kongo following Angolan independence, the city remains a vital cultural landmark in Angola's Zaire Province, with a 2024 population of 221,141.
