A gangster's path to redemption is paved with a 1990s prophecy
In short: What happens when a loyal henchman discovers his life is a scripted destiny? In the 2025 Tamil drama Retro, a man caught between a criminal empire and a violent cult must navigate a web of betrayal to reclaim a sacred spear and find his true path.
Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Retro is an expansive romantic gangster drama that spans decades of Indian history. The narrative follows Paarivel 'Paari' Kannan, an orphan raised by a gangster in 1960s Thoothukudi. Despite his upbringing in a life of crime, Paari remains fiercely loyal to his protector, Thilagan, even as he falls in love with a veterinarian named Rukmini. Their lives take a violent turn in 1993 when a high-stakes arms deal, code-named 'Gold Fish,' leads to a brutal confrontation that leaves Paari imprisoned and his love abandoned.
The story shifts gears in 1998 when Paari is forced to fight for a secretive cult on a remote island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Here, he encounters the 'Rubber Cult,' a tyrannical regime where the wealthy engage in rigged gladiator-style matches against enslaved locals. While impersonating a comedic therapist to reach Rukmini, Paari discovers a startling truth: he is the prophesied child of a local legend. His biological parents, Pasupathy and Lakshmi, had smuggled him to India to protect him from the wrath of a local tyrant, Rajavel.
The film culminates in a high-stakes confrontation where Paari must balance his personal quest for love with a destiny of violence. After reclaiming a sacred spear and defeating the cult leaders, Paari manages to outwit his former associates, using the very weapons they once sought to secure their freedom. With a budget of ₹60–65 crore, this major project filmed throughout the Andaman Islands, Chennai, and Kerala, earning a global total of ₹80–250 crore.
