Why a Georgia indie band chose a name from English history
In short: Manchester Orchestra didn't start with a plan to be a band. Instead, it began as a solitary high school student's escape from a small-town Christian academy, fueled by a summer of listening to The Smiths and a vision of friends forming a collective musical orchestra.
The band's identity is rooted in a specific aesthetic and personal history. Lead singer Andy Hull chose the name 'Manchester' because of the English city's bohemian reputation and rich musical heritage, following a period where he listened exclusively to The Smiths. He appended 'Orchestra' because he initially didn't want to be in a traditional band; he envisioned a collective where all his friends could participate as a single unit.
Hull's creative output began while he was still in high school at Providence Christian Academy in suburban Atlanta. Feeling alienated by his environment, he spent his senior year studying at home and recorded his first full-length album in 2004. This period of isolation set the stage for the band's evolution, which has seen numerous lineup changes since its formation in 2004. While Hull is the only original member, the group has maintained a consistent output of six studio albums and several EPs.
The band's trajectory is marked by significant shifts in musical direction. For instance, they chose not to release their early recording, 'Nobody Sings Anymore,' because the band that made it was fundamentally different from the group that followed. This commitment to artistic evolution is also seen in their 2014 release 'Hope,' which served as a song-by-song re-imagining of 'Cope,' exploring how the same material could be rendered with 'pretty' sensibilities rather than 'nasty and guttural' ones.
