In short: Marikina, a highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, evolved from a 17th-century Jesuit mission into the country's shoe manufacturing powerhouse. Despite its reputation for effective governance and industrial success, the city has faced a complex history of political turmoil, catastrophic river flooding, and recent high-level administrative suspensions.

Founded in 1630 by Jesuits in the fertile Marikina Valley, the area was originally known as Jesus dela Peña. Its identity shifted significantly over centuries, serving as the provincial capital of Manila during the 1898 Philippine Revolution. By the mid-20th century, Marikina had re-emerged as the 'Shoe Capital of the Philippines,' a title earned after World War II as the local workforce developed a disciplined industrial ethic. Today, the city produces nearly 70% of the nation's footwear, housing the Philippine International Footwear Center and a museum dedicated to the collection of former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

The city's geography is defined by the Marikina River, which has been both a lifeline and a source of recurring disaster. The river sits atop the Marikina Valley Fault System, which triggered a major earthquake in 1665. More recently, the river has been prone to extreme flooding, with record-breaking water levels reaching 22 meters during Typhoon Vamco in 2020. These environmental challenges have historically intersected with political instability, including the dark period of Martial Law in the 1970s, when the riverbanks were unfortunately used to discard victims of political violence.

In recent years, Marikina has been recognized as a model city for its administrative services and urban planning, notably under the legacy of former leader Bayani Fernando. However, the city's political landscape remains volatile. In March 2025, Mayor Marcelino Teodoro and other key officials were preventively suspended for six months by the Ombudsman amid an investigation into alleged PhilHealth fund misallocation. This development has led to a leadership transition, with twin councilors Rommel and Ronnie Acuña sworn in as acting mayor and vice mayor, reflecting the ongoing complexities of governance in this historic industrial hub.
