Marib: From the ancient kingdom of Sheba to the frontlines of modern war
In short: Once the fabled capital of the Sabaean kingdom and a prosperous hub for the ancient frankincense trade, Marib has transformed into a critical energy center and a refuge for nearly a million displaced people. Today, this historic desert city sits at the volatile heart of Yemen's ongoing civil conflict.
Marib, located in north-central Yemen, was the seat of the Sabaean kingdom, which flourished from approximately 950 to 115 BC. Often identified as the biblical Sheba, the city thrived by controlling the lucrative trade routes of frankincense and myrrh. Its prosperity relied on the engineering marvel of the ancient Marib Dam, a sophisticated stone-and-masonry structure that irrigated thousands of acres of desert, supporting a culture that lasted over a millennium. The site, once dubbed the Paris of the ancient world, remains a landmark of Arabian archaeology, featuring the ruins of temples dedicated to the deity Almaqah.
The city's modern relevance shifted dramatically following the 1984 discovery of significant petroleum deposits. This transformed Marib into the cornerstone of Yemen's energy sector, hosting a refinery and serving as the origin point for a 438-kilometre oil pipeline. Unlike other regions in Yemen that suffer from frequent fuel shortages, Marib has maintained relative stability in its energy supply, allowing it to export essential resources to the rest of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.
During the Yemeni Civil War, Marib became a strategic gateway and a flashpoint for military control. While the Houthis have launched repeated offensives to capture the city, local tribes and government forces have largely repelled them. The conflict has fundamentally altered the city's demographics; by 2021, Marib had absorbed nearly a million refugees fleeing violence elsewhere. Despite the persistent threat of missile and drone attacks, the city remains a vital stronghold, balancing its ancient heritage with the intense pressures of contemporary geopolitical survival.
