In short: Before leading the UK's largest police force, Mark Rowley was a mathematics student at Cambridge. His career has spanned from investigating high-profile murders to managing the massive security operations required for royal state funerals and coronations, navigating complex political tensions along the way.

Born in Birmingham in November 1964, Mark Rowley's path to the top of British policing was built on a foundation of mathematics. After graduating with a BA from St Catharine's College, Cambridge, in 1986, he began his career as a constable with the West Midlands Police in 1987. His early years involved a variety of detective and uniformed roles in the Birmingham area.

Rowley's rise through the ranks included significant leadership roles, such as serving as Chief Constable of Surrey Police from 2009 to 2011. During his tenure at Surrey, he led the five-year investigation into the murder of Milly Dowler, which concluded in 2011. He also held senior positions within the National Criminal Intelligence Service, where he focused on covert operations against organised crime.

In September 2022, Rowley was sworn in as the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, succeeding Dame Cressida Dick. His leadership has been tested by high-stakes events, including overseeing the security for the state funeral of Elizabeth II and the coronation of Charles III and Camilla in May 2023. He has also navigated intense public scrutiny, such as the controversy in April 2024 regarding officers' conduct during a protest involving the Campaign Against Antisemitism, and a 2024 incident involving a Sky News journalist.

In April 2022, Rowley expanded into writing by partnering with journalist David Derbyshire to create the counter-terrorism novel 'The Sleep of Reason'.
