In short: Announced in 2012 as a massive entertainment complex in Kent, the London Resort promised Europe's largest indoor water park and thousands of jobs. Yet, after years of planning delays, legal battles, and the discovery of a rare jumping spider, the dream officially collapsed into liquidation by early 2025.

First unveiled in 2012 as the London Paramount Entertainment Resort, the project aimed to transform the Swanscombe Peninsula into a world-class destination. Backed by figures like Abdulla Al-Humaidi, the developers secured status as a nationally significant infrastructure project, allowing them to bypass local planning hurdles. The vision was grand: a sprawling site featuring theatres, hotels, and rides based on Paramount blockbusters like Mission: Impossible. With an estimated cost of £3.5 billion, it was expected to employ 27,000 people and serve as a catalyst for local development.

However, the project faced mounting obstacles. In 2021, Natural England designated the site as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique insect life, including the rare distinguished jumping spider. This designation, combined with concerns over traffic, free port status, and a lack of transparent funding, stalled progress. The London Resort Company Holdings (LRCH) struggled to provide necessary updates, leading to sharp criticism from the Planning Inspectorate and local businesses frustrated by years of uncertainty.

The end came in stages. After withdrawing its planning application in March 2022, the company entered administration in 2023. Legal disputes with Paramount further complicated the situation. By January 2025, a High Court judge ordered the company to be wound up, and by March 2025, it had entered liquidation. A spokesperson for the firm finally conceded that the dream had been ended by the courts, marking the definitive close of a project that many local observers had long considered dead in the water.
