The high-altitude race against time for an Alpine marmot
In short: Follow Mox, a young male marmot, as he navigates the perilous life of the Alps. This documentary captures his transition from a vulnerable juvenile to a dominant survivor in a landscape defined by extreme weather and constant predation.
Born underground for four weeks, Mox emerges at an altitude of 6500 feet with a critical mission: accumulate enough body fat to survive a six-month hibernation. His early life is a balance of social bonding—including mutual grooming and learning colony scents—and intense foraging on alpine plants.
The transition to adulthood brings new hazards. After waking from hibernation emaciated and exhausted, Mox must face predators like eagles, foxes, and wolves. To secure his own territory, he eventually faces off against other males in fierce fights before being forced to leave his original clan to establish his own family.
