In short: Mbekezeli Mbokazi didn't just climb the professional football ladder; he sprinted up it. By captaining his club at 19 and breaking a two-decade-old leadership record, he became one of the fastest rising stars in South African soccer history.

Born on September 19, 2005, Mbekezeli Mbokazi's ascent began within the Orlando Pirates reserve system. His transition to the senior team was meteoric: he made his first-team debut on March 5, 2025, in a 1–0 victory over Chippa United. Within just three months of that debut, he earned his first call-up to South Africa's senior national team, showcasing an elite trajectory for a center-back.

Mbokazi’s leadership qualities were identified early. The PSL Reserve's Pirates DDC side was led by him as captain during 2024. By the start of the 2025–26 season, following an injury to Nkosinathi Sibisi, Mbokazi became the youngest player to captain Orlando Pirates since Mbulelo Mabizela during the 2002–03 season. His impact was immediate; he helped the club secure both the MTN 8 and the Carling Knockout Cup trophies in 2025.

His international career followed a similar rapid expansion. After helping South Africa win the 2024 COSAFA U-20 Cup, his senior debut came in May 2025 against Mozambique. He quickly became a fixture for the national team, notably earning man of the match honors in a September 2025 draw against Nigeria. This momentum culminated in his inclusion in South Africa's final 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started all four matches.

In December 2025, Mbokazi moved to Major League Soccer, signing with Chicago Fire FC on a deal running until 2029. His move to the United States followed a decorated domestic season where he was named the Carling Knockout Cup player of the tournament and received a nomination for the 2025 CAF young player of the year award.
