From North American rookie to the architect of South African soccer
In short: Kaizer Motaung didn't just play football; he built an empire. After a breakout season in the United States, he returned home to create one of Africa's most successful sporting brands, transforming from a prolific goalscorer into a titan of sports administration and media.
Born in Soweto in 1944, Motaung began his professional journey with Orlando Pirates at just 16 years old. His career took a pivotal turn in 1968 when he was recruited by the Atlanta Chiefs for the North American Soccer League (NASL). Despite facing harsh weather conditions and injuries, Motaung excelled immediately. He debuted as a substitute against Manchester City, scoring twice, before becoming the league's top scorer with sixteen goals in fifteen matches. This feat earned him 'Rookie of the Year' honors and an All-Star selection.
Upon returning to South Africa in 1970, Motaung leveraged his international experience to found Kaizer Chiefs FC. The club’s name was a tribute to both himself and his former NASL team. While many faced early setbacks, Motaung successfully balanced veterans and rookies to build a massive following. By the turn of the century, Kaizer Chiefs had become South Africa's most successful team, boasting over 78 trophies and an estimated 14 million supporters nationwide.
Motaung’s influence extended far beyond his own club. In 1996, he co-founded the South African Premier League (PSL) to attract corporate sponsorship and investment. His leadership was recognized nationally when he was voted one of the Top 100 Great South Africans in 2004 and received an Entrepreneurial Leadership Award from Henley Management College. He also played a key role in securing South Africa's hosting rights for the 2010 World Cup, serving on the delegation to FIFA headquarters in Zürich.
Today, Motaung remains a central figure in football governance, serving on the PSL Board of Governors and SAFA’s executive committee. His business reach includes non-executive directorships at major firms like Primedia Limited, which owns 40% of Kaizer Chiefs. In 2022, his contributions to the nation were further honored with an honorary doctorate.
