In short: Born from the informal gatherings of migrant workers in Soweto, Orlando Pirates has grown into a South African powerhouse. Beyond the trophies, the club holds a unique place in history, being one of only two Southern Hemisphere teams to conquer the African continent and earning recognition from Nelson Mandela.

The club's origins trace back to 1934, when a group of teenagers at the Orlando Boys Club began playing football. It was in 1937 that Andries Mkhwanazi, known as "Pele Pele," encouraged the formal formation of the club. These early players were often barefoot and lacked kits, competing in the Johannesburg Bantu Football Association's minor leagues. By 1940, the club’s first president, Bethuel Mokgosinyane, used his own funds to purchase the team's first official kit.

The Buccaneers achieved continental immortality in 1995 by winning the African Champions Cup, making them the first club from Southern Africa to secure that title. This feat was so significant that it earned the team an honor from South Africa's first democratic president, Nelson Mandela. While many believe the star on their badge was added after this victory, photographic evidence from the 1995 final against ASEC Mimosas shows players already wearing it, suggesting they anticipated the win.

Orlando Pirates has become a dominant force in South African football, accumulating 90 total trophies, including nine league titles. They achieved a historic feat by winning three major trophies in consecutive seasons during the 2010–11 and 2011–12 periods. More recently, they dominated the MTN 8, winning four consecutive finals by 2025. The club also made history in 2005 by acquiring a 51% share in Ellis Park Stadium, creating the first majority black-owned stadium in the country.

The club's legacy is also woven into the fabric of South African football through its legendary alumni. Renowned players like Jomo Sono and Kaizer Motaung played for the Buccaneers before going on to found their own iconic clubs. Today, the club remains a titan of the South African Premiership, playing its home matches at the historic Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
