The Canadian city with all hell for a basement
In short: Known as "The Gas City," Medicine Hat sits atop massive natural gas reserves. This abundance has fueled industrial growth and earned it a colorful description from Rudyard Kipling. Beyond its energy, the city is Canada's sunniest location and a pioneer in social policy, having achieved functional zero chronic homelessness in 2021.
Medicine Hat's identity is deeply tied to the resources beneath its surface. The city's nickname, "The Gas City," stems from the vast natural gas fields that have driven its industrialization. This energy wealth was so significant that author Rudyard Kipling once remarked the area had "all hell for a basement." This resource base helped the city become an industrial hub, once referred to as the "Pittsburgh of the West."
The landscape itself is defined by the South Saskatchewan River valley and the semi-arid climate of Palliser's Triangle. It is officially recognized by Environment and Climate Change Canada as the sunniest place in Canada, averaging 2,544 hours of sunshine per year. This climate, characterized by dry summers and mild winters due to Chinook winds, has made the city a popular destination for retirees.
The region also holds deep historical significance. Archaeological excavations at the Saamis Archeological Site revealed that the area has been inhabited for millennia, with radiocarbon dating placing occupation as early as 1500 BC. The name "Medicine Hat" is an English interpretation of the Blackfoot word Saamis, referring to the eagle tail feather headdresses worn by medicine men.
In recent years, the city has gained recognition for its social achievements. By adopting a "Housing First" policy in 2009, Medicine Hat became the first Canadian city to reach "functional zero" chronic homelessness in 2021. This meant keeping chronic homelessness to three people or fewer for three months in a row.
