In short: Spanning over 100,000 square kilometres in northeast Alberta, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is a unique administrative giant. Home to the massive Athabasca oil sands, this region balances industrial growth with a complex network of rivers that dictate the safety and daily lives of its residents.

Incorporated on April 1, 1995, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo was created to manage the distinct needs of a large urban centre alongside vast rural territories. The region is defined by its geography, particularly the Athabasca River, which meanders northward through the central landscape before emptying into Lake Athabasca. This river system, along with tributaries like the Clearwater, Hangingstone, and Christina rivers, serves as a vital, yet occasionally volatile, feature of the local environment.

The region's hydrology is a constant focus for municipal authorities. During spring, snowmelt and ice jams can trigger sudden flash floods, particularly in areas near the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers. In 2013, heavy rains forced the region to declare a state of emergency as the Hangingstone River rose to dangerous levels. By April 2020, a 25-kilometre-long ice jam on the Athabasca River caused significant flooding in downtown Fort McMurray, resulting in over $520 million in insured damage and displacing 13,000 people.

Beyond its water systems, the municipality is a hub of industrial activity and demographic change. It holds the Athabasca oil sands, which have driven rapid growth and attracted a diverse population, including many international immigrants. While the region faces environmental challenges—ranging from spring floods to the massive 2016 Horse River Wildfire—it remains a critical economic engine for Alberta. The municipality continues to monitor weather patterns and river levels closely, using stations like WSC 07CD004 to provide warnings and protect its residents from the unpredictable nature of the northern watershed.
