In short: Before it was a census-designated place in Clay County, Middleburg served as a vital ferry crossing and military depot during the Seminole Wars. Its history spans from indigenous Timucua lands to a strategic Confederate stronghold, eventually evolving into the expanding suburban community that exists in Florida today.

The area now known as Middleburg began as a transit point in the 1820s, defined by the north and south forks of Black Creek. Following the construction of a federal military road in 1827, entrepreneurs like Asa Clark established ferry services. By the 1830s, the location—then called Garey’s Ferry—became a critical logistical hub. During the Second Seminole War, the military built Fort Heileman there, which functioned as the primary supply depot for Florida’s east coast until its abandonment in 1842. The village eventually consolidated with the neighboring community of Whitesville to form Middleburgh in 1851.

The town’s strategic importance persisted into the American Civil War. Despite a local history of pro-Union sentiment, the area became a site of intense conflict. In October 1864, Union forces from the 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry raided Middleburg, burning warehouses and docks. Confederate forces under Captain J.J. Dickison retaliated, leading to the Battle of Halsey’s Plantation. This engagement, also known as the Battle of Big Gum Creek, resulted in a Confederate victory and twelve Union deaths. Other skirmishes, such as the Battle of the Tiger Head, further marked the region as a contested zone.

Post-war, the town faced significant economic decline, exacerbated by the Great Freeze of 1895 and a shift in regional trade patterns. However, the late 19th century also saw the development of communities like Hill Top, established by African American homesteaders such as Grant Forman. While the population remained small for decades, the 1990s marked a turning point. Today, Middleburg is a rapidly growing part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area, with infrastructure projects like the First Coast Expressway reflecting its transition into a modern residential hub.
