In short: Before entering the halls of Congress, Mike Flood built a sprawling media empire across Nebraska. A former radio host known as Sideshow Mike, he transitioned from broadcasting to state politics, eventually securing a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives while maintaining his influence as a prominent media entrepreneur.

Born in 1975 and raised in Norfolk, Nebraska, Michael John Flood began his career in broadcasting during his high school years. He continued this path at the University of Notre Dame and later worked as a radio personality in Lincoln. In 1999, while attending the University of Nebraska College of Law, he established the foundation for what would become Flood Communications. By 2023, his media holdings had grown to include 15 radio stations and seven television stations, all integrated into the News Channel Nebraska network, which he founded in 2015 as the state's only 24-hour news outlet.

Flood's political trajectory began in 2004 when he was elected to the Nebraska Legislature. During his initial tenure, which lasted until 2013, he served as speaker and championed legislation that prohibited abortions after 20 weeks of gestation. He also played a key role in 2011 by negotiating a compromise to adjust the path of the Keystone XL pipeline. Although he briefly withdrew from a gubernatorial bid in 2012 due to his wife's health, he returned to the state legislature in 2021 after winning an unopposed election.

In 2022, Flood successfully challenged for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives following the resignation of the incumbent. Since taking office, he has balanced his legislative duties with his business interests, though he has declined offers to lead the University of Nebraska system to remain in Congress. His recent political activities include chairing the Main Street Caucus as of July 2025 and serving as chairman of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance. Throughout his career, Flood has navigated the intersection of media ownership and public service, remaining a significant figure in Nebraska politics.
