The bustling Italian hub that serves as a cornerstone for European low-cost travel
In short: Milan Bergamo Airport, officially known as Il Caravaggio, is a powerhouse of Italian aviation. As one of Ryanair's four largest operating bases, it handles millions of passengers, forming part of a massive metropolitan airport system that dominates the country's air traffic by sheer volume.
Operating as a vital component of the Milan metropolitan airport system, Bergamo is the third-busiest international airport in Italy. In 2024, it served nearly 17.4 million passengers. This volume is part of a larger network—including Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate—which, with a combined 56.9 million passengers in 2024, constitutes Italy's largest airport system by passenger numbers. The facility's scale is immense. It remains a key node for various regional and international destinations. This makes it a vital transit point for travelers across Europe.
The airport's identity is deeply tied to its geography and history. Formerly known as Orio al Serio International Airport, it is now officially named Il Caravaggio International Airport, honoring the Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, who was born in the nearby town of Caravaggio. The facility is located in Orio al Serio, approximately 3.7 km southeast of Bergamo and 45 km northeast of Milan. The site is conveniently situated near major transport routes. One such connection is the A4 motorway. This road serves as a primary link for the airport's road network.
Managing this high-traffic hub is SACBO, a company that holds a partnership with SEA – Aeroporti di Milano, the operator of the Malpensa and Linate airports. While the airport is a major logistics and passenger center, it has seen shifts in cargo operations; for instance, DHL Aviation relocated its hub from Bergamo to Milan Malpensa in early 2022, following an announcement in March 2021. The airport's infrastructure includes two distinct terminal zones. These are designated as Zone A and Zone B. Certain gates feature boarding bridges, while others require remote boarding.
To manage its complex operations, the airport launched a digital twin initiative in 2024. This technology allows for real-time simulation of airport operations, providing critical support for infrastructure planning and emergency management in an increasingly crowded airspace. Public transport options are plentiful for commuters. Frequent coach services connect the terminal to central Milan. Additionally, a new railway station is expected to open by 2026.
