From military airfield to a bustling gateway for millions of travelers
In short: Once a strategic military base used by Allied forces during World War II, the Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport has undergone a massive transformation. Today, this Italian hub serves as a vital connection for millions, evolving from a 1930s airfield into a modern international gateway.
The airport's origins date back to the 1930s, when it was established as a military airfield by the Regia Aeronautica. Its strategic importance became evident during World War II; in late September 1943, the British Eighth Army seized the site, converting it into an Allied military airfield. Until May 1945, the site functioned as a command post and operational base for the Royal Air Force alongside the US Army Air Forces' Twelfth and Fifteenth Air Forces during the war. It also hosted the Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force and the Balkan Air Force.
The transition to civilian use began in the 1960s with Alitalia, which operated regular schedules to cities like Rome and Venice. As aviation technology advanced, specifically with the introduction of the DC-9-30, the airport required significant infrastructural upgrades, including a new runway. A building completed in 1981, originally designed for cargo, was repurposed to serve as the passenger terminal.
The turn of the millennium brought further expansion to meet rising demand. Following a runway extension for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and terminal renovations in 2000, the airport underwent a major modernization phase. A new passenger terminal was opened in 2005, accompanied by a new control tower completed in 2006 and a multi-storey car park. By 2023, the airport had grown into a major international facility, handling 6,461,179 passengers.
Today, the airport is named after Pope John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyła, and is also known as Palese Airport after the nearby neighborhood. It remains a crucial transport node, connected to the Bari city centre via the metropolitan railway, the A14 motorway, and various bus services.
