How a Scottish term for a stream defined a New Jersey township's industrial identity
In short: The name Millburn is not a simple geographic label. It is a linguistic relic, derived from the Scottish word for a stream. This waterway once powered the local paper mills that defined the area's early economy, eventually evolving into a cultural landmark that serves as the state's official theater.
Incorporated in 1857 from parts of Springfield Township, Millburn’s identity is deeply tied to the Rahway River. Before its formal establishment, the area was known by various names including Rum Brook, Milltown, and Vauxhall. The name Millburn was adopted to honor the stream that fueled the region's early industrial growth. By 1790, Samuel Campbell had established the first paper mill on this water, which eventually became known as the Diamond Mill.
The transition from an agricultural settlement to a residential hub was marked by the arrival of the Morris and Essex Railroad in 1835, which linked the township to major urban centers. As the local paper industry faded, the site of the original Diamond Mill was repurposed into the Paper Mill Playhouse. Established in 1938, this venue has since been recognized as the official state theater of New Jersey, bridging the gap between the town's industrial past and its modern cultural status.
Today, the Rahway River remains a central feature of the landscape, offering opportunities for fishing and kayaking. The township itself has evolved into a high-income residential community, home to over 21,000 residents as of the 2020 census. While it retains its historical connection to the river, the modern economy is largely driven by professionals commuting to Manhattan and upscale retail, such as The Mall at Short Hills, which spans 1,400,000 square feet of leasable space.
