In short: Named after a district in Havana, Cuba, Miramar has grown into a vital piece of the South Florida landscape. Beyond its suburban identity, the city serves as a significant demographic crossroads and a strategic base for major federal and aviation operations in the region.

Incorporated on May 26, 1955, Miramar began its civic life with an appointed leadership team, as the Florida governor appointed the inaugural mayor and city council on June 20, 1955. The city's first municipal elections did not occur until 1959. Over the decades, its governance evolved; until March 13, 1991, the city utilized a 'strong mayor' system, but voters later approved a shift to a commission–city manager government via referendum on March 14, 1990.

The city's geography covers 31.3 square miles, with 29.5 square miles consisting of land and 1.8 square miles of water. This footprint supports a diverse population that, as of the 2020 census, totaled 134,721 residents. Ranked 14th within Florida, Miramar also stands as the sixth-biggest urban centre in the Miami metro area and the fourth-largest in Broward County.

Miramar's economic and social fabric is shaped by its diverse residents and major institutional presence. In 2000, the city held high national rankings for its Caribbean and Latin American populations, including the 5th highest percentage of Jamaican residents (15.4%) and the 12th highest percentage of Trinidadian residents (1.2%). The city also hosts significant facilities, such as the 330,000-square-foot LEED-certified Leadership in Energy & Environment Design building, which houses the FBI Miami field office and a GSA office. This federal office moved to the city on December 8, 2014, and the facility was dedicated on April 10, 2015.
