How Disney turns a movie screen into a portal for a runaway train ride
In short: Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is the first ride-through attraction dedicated to Mickey Mouse. It uses trackless technology and a unique 2.5D visual effect to pull guests directly into a cartoon world. The experience begins in a theater, but quickly shatters the fourth wall to send riders on a chaotic adventure.
The attraction, which debuted at Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2020 and Disneyland in 2023, is built on the premise of a cartoon premiere titled Perfect Picnic. Guests enter a theater—a replica of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Florida or the El CapiTOON Theater in California—to watch the short film. The narrative takes a turn when a pie clogs the smokestack of Goofy's train, causing an explosion that creates a literal hole in the movie screen. This transition allows guests to step through the screen and into the animated world of the Paul Rudish television series.
Once inside the cartoon, guests board a train for what Goofy promises is a guided tour. The journey quickly devolves into a runaway adventure when a track switch is triggered, separating the passenger cars from the locomotive. The ride utilizes trackless vehicles to navigate through a series of animated environments, including a desert, an amusement park caught in a tornado, a tropical island with a volcanic eruption, and an underwater city. These scenes employ a 2.5D technology that provides depth to 2D environments without requiring 3D glasses.
The experience is designed with meticulous detail, featuring more hidden Mickeys than any other Disney attraction. The queue areas are tailored to their specific locations; the Disneyland version includes the Mickey Through the Ears exhibit and posters parodying live-action films like The Absent-Minded Professor and The Rocketeer. The ride concludes with the train returning to a peaceful park setting where Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto enjoy their picnic. As guests exit back through the movie screen, they are reminded that they have just participated in a zippy, zany, out-of-control adventure.
