A 54-game win streak and a path for Black athletes
In short: Before the modern era of college sports, Morgan State University built a football dynasty that served as a vital sanctuary for Black talent. From a legendary undefeated run in the 1930s to producing Pro Football Hall of Fame icons, the Bears' history is a blueprint for athletic excellence.
The Morgan State Bears began their football journey in 1898, just 31 years after the university's founding. The program's identity was fundamentally shaped by Head Coach Edward P. Hurt, who took over in 1929. Hurt and his assistant, Talmadge L. Hill, intentionally built a program that provided a venue for Black athletes to showcase their skills at a time when such opportunities were largely non-existent. This mission yielded extraordinary results: from 1931 to 1938, Hurt led the Bears to a 54-game winning streak without a single loss, including 11 undefeated seasons.
The program's success continued into the mid-20th century under Earl "Papa Bear" Banks, who coached from 1960 to 1973. Banks elevated the team to national prominence, leading them to four CIAA titles and a MEAC championship. During his tenure, Morgan twice led the entire nation in total defense. Leroy Kelly and Willie Lanier, both Pro Football Hall of Famers, were among the 35 athletes he guided into the NFL, marking a significant influence on professional sports. Since 1950, the program has produced at least one NFL player every single decade.
While the team has faced periods of struggle, including 23 consecutive losing seasons following Banks' departure, they remain a storied fixture in Baltimore. They compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and host games at the 10,000-seat Hughes Stadium. The Bears' legacy is marked by 23 conference championships and a unique international milestone: in 1976, they played in the first American college football game in Asia, held in Tokyo, Japan.
Today, the program continues to balance its rich history with modern competition. While they have made appearances in both Division I-AA/FCS and Division II playoffs, their enduring significance lies in their role as a pipeline for professional talent. To date, 53 former players have played professional football, with 39 reaching the NFL and others finding success in the CFL, WFL, and various other leagues.
