The first K-pop act to top the charts on debut
In short: In 2010, a new girl group shattered industry records before they even finished their first month of promotion. By reaching number one on the Gaon Digital Chart with their debut single, Miss A established a blueprint for rapid success in the competitive South Korean music scene.
Formed by AQ Entertainment (a subsidiary of JYP Entertainment), Miss A debuted as a quartet featuring Fei, Jia, Min, and Suzy. The track also secured the title of best-performing single of 2010 on that same chart. The group first appeared on Chinese variety shows as the "Chinese Wonder Girls." This early iteration included member Woo Hyerim. Additionally, fifteen-year-old Bae Suzy joined a trio of trainees in March 2010 to form the final lineup.
The group's trajectory was marked by rapid commercial milestones and diverse branding. They quickly followed up with their debut studio album, A Class (2011), which produced two more number one hits. By February 2012, their EP Touch achieved over one million views on YouTube within a single day of its release. The group also expanded internationally early on, signing with the Samsung Electronics group in China and performing for the Samsung Beat Festival. Their second single album featured an exotic and doll-like transformation for the track "Breathe." They also released a special edition of their first full album in China on September 30, 2011. This specific release reached number three on Taiwan's G-Music Chart.
Despite their commercial height—including being ranked as the tenth-best K-pop girl group of the past decade by Billboard in 2017—the group's lineup shifted over time. Originally formed from five trainees, the group saw members Jia (left May 2016) and Min (left November 2017) depart before JYP Entertainment officially announced their disbandment on December 27, 2017. The group became inactive indefinitely following the promotion of their final EP, Colors. During this period, management stated that remaining members were focusing on solo work. Their third studio album was not released before the official end of the group.
