In short: N. Chandrababu Naidu has dominated Andhra Pradesh politics for decades, navigating shifting alliances and internal party coups. From his rise within the Telugu Desam Party to his multiple terms as chief minister, Naidu has remained a central, if controversial, figure in the evolution of Indian state and national governance.

N. Chandrababu Naidu’s political trajectory is deeply intertwined with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which was founded in March 1982 by the legendary Telugu film star Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, known as NTR. While NTR initially led the party to a landslide victory in the 1983 state assembly elections, internal instability eventually emerged. By 1993, tensions grew between NTR and his son-in-law, Naidu, following NTR’s marriage to Lakshmi Parvathi and his subsequent attempts to position her as his successor.

In 1995, Naidu orchestrated an intraparty coup, successfully ousting NTR and assuming the role of chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Under his leadership, the TDP maintained its grip on state power, though it eventually faced significant electoral challenges. These included the rise of the Telangana movement, which demanded the creation of a separate state, and the emergence of rival political factions that eroded the TDP's traditional support base among the Kamma caste and in coastal districts.

Naidu’s influence has extended beyond state borders into the national arena. In the 1999 parliamentary elections, the TDP secured 29 seats, becoming the fourth-largest party in the Lok Sabha. This performance allowed the party to provide crucial outside support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance between 1998 and 2004. Despite fluctuating fortunes—including a sharp decline in seat counts during the 2004 and 2009 elections—Naidu has repeatedly returned to the helm, serving as chief minister across multiple non-consecutive terms, including 1995–2004, 2014–2019, and beginning again in 2024.
