The pageant that outpaced the world's second oldest beauty competition
In short: While most see a glamour competition, Miss Earth operates as a global platform for environmental advocacy. By leveraging the entertainment industry as a tool for conservation, it has grown into one of the "Big Four" pageants, surpassing even Miss Universe in total participating countries by 2022.
Launched in 2001 by Carousel Productions, Miss Earth was designed with a specific mission: to use the beauty pageant industry as a vehicle for environmental preservation. It adopted the slogan "Beauties For a Cause" in 2001 and began awarding its first "Beauty for a Cause" prize in 2003. Regarding global scale, Miss Earth overtook Miss Universe—the world's second oldest international beauty contest—during 2020 and 2022 to rank as the second biggest pageant worldwide by total nations involved.
The organization functions through a complex web of partnerships. The Miss Earth Foundation collaborates with national environmental ministries, private corporations, and major NGOs like the World Wildlife Foundation and Greenpeace. It also co-hosts the United Nations Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth awards, which recognize policy-level environmental leaders. Furthermore, it has partnered with The Climate Reality Project to provide leadership training conducted by former US Vice President Al Gore.
The pageant serves as a unique diplomatic and cultural bridge, often attracting delegates from nations where beauty pageants are traditionally frowned upon or restricted. For example, in 2007, it hosted the first simultaneous competition featuring delegates from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Tibet. It has also facilitated debuts for countries like Bhutan (2008), Rwanda (2008), and Palestine (2016). While some participants have faced domestic controversy over attire—such as an Afghan delegate in 2003 or a Pakistani queen in 2005—the pageant continues to navigate these cultural nuances while promoting the "5Rs": rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle, and respect.
Titleholders are required to spend their year on active advocacy. This includes tree planting, school tours, and eco-fashion shows. The Miss Earth Foundation specifically targets youth through its "I Love Planet Earth School Tour," which distributes educational aids to children. By combining high-profile media guesting with grassroots activities like street campaigns and cleanups, the pageant seeks to transform aesthetic competition into measurable environmental action.
