In short: Misti, a steep-sided stratovolcano in the Peruvian Andes, looms just 12 kilometres from Arequipa. While it is a symbol of the city, its proximity poses a severe threat. With a history of explosive eruptions and potential for devastating mudflows, this mountain is now the subject of intense geological monitoring.

Rising 5,822 metres above sea level, Misti is a geologically young volcano that has developed through four distinct growth stages. Its current structure, known as Misti 4, features nested summit craters and an active lava plug that emits volcanic gases. The volcano sits at the edge of the Arequipa tectonic depression, a region where the Nazca Plate subducts beneath South America, driving the volcanism of the Central Volcanic Zone.

The mountain's history is marked by intense explosive activity. Over the past 50,000 years, numerous eruptions have blanketed the surrounding landscape with tephra. Major events, such as the 'Autopista' eruption 15,000 years ago, demonstrate the volcano's capacity for significant ash fallout. The most recent major explosive eruption occurred approximately 2,000 years ago, releasing roughly 0.4 cubic kilometres of volcanic material in an event that likely lasted only a few hours.

Today, Misti is considered one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes due to the rapid expansion of Arequipa's suburbs onto its lower slopes. Narrow valleys on the volcano's flanks could channel fast-moving volcanic debris and mudflows directly into the city and its critical infrastructure, including hydroelectric plants. While the Inca once attempted to appease the mountain with human sacrifices during the 1440–1470 eruption, modern safety relies on the Peruvian Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET), which established an observatory in 2005 to track seismic activity and map potential hazards.
