In short: While most people associate Australia's tallest mountains with the rugged interior of the continent, the nation's true vertical champion sits in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This active volcanic summit towers over the mainland, offering a frozen, subantarctic wilderness that remains one of the country's most remote frontiers.

Situated within the southern Indian Ocean, Heard Island—an external territory of Australia—features Mawson Peak as its tallest summit. Rising to 9,005 feet (2,745 meters), it stands as a geological anomaly: it is higher than any peak found on the Australian mainland. Among all Australian mountains, it is surpassed only by those located within the Australian Antarctic Territory. The peak serves as the summit of Big Ben, an active volcanic massif that remains one of Australia's only active volcanoes.

The mountain's history is defined by both exploration and extreme mountaineering challenges. Although Heard Island was discovered in 1833 by a British sealing vessel, it wasn't until 1947 that the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) established a research station there. The peak was named in honor of Sir Douglas Mawson, an explorer who visited the island in 1929. It is characterized as a largely symmetrical volcanic cone, estimated to have begun forming within the last 40,000 years.

Conquering the peak proved difficult for decades due to its harsh subantarctic climate. The first organized attempt occurred in August 1953, where three explorers were forced to retreat after being trapped in a blizzard and suffering from hypoxia and carbon monoxide poisoning in a snow cave. After several failed attempts in 1953 and 1963, the first successful ascent was finally achieved in 1965. Since then, only three successful climbs have been recorded, occurring in 1965, 1983, and 2000.
