A city divided by a river and its industrial past
In short: Once the economic powerhouse of Kosovo, Mitrovica has been transformed by conflict and shifting borders. Today, the Ibar River serves as a stark boundary between two municipalities, separating ethnic majorities and reflecting a complex history of empire, mining, and war.
The modern identity of Mitrovica is defined by its division. Following the North Kosovo crisis in 2013, the city was split into two separate municipalities: South Mitrovica, which has an ethnic Albanian majority, and North Mitrovica, which has an ethnic Serb majority. This division mirrors the broader ethnic tensions that emerged following the 1999 Kosovo War, a conflict that saw the city transition from Kosovo's economic center to its poorest region.
Historically, the city's prosperity was tied to the Trepça Mines, a massive mining and metallurgy complex. During the Yugoslav period, these mines drove significant industrial development. The city's strategic importance was further cemented in the late 19th century when the completion of a railway line to Skopje between 1873 and 1878 linked the town to the port of Thessaloniki, connecting it to wider European markets.
The city's name is believed to derive from the 8th-century Byzantine church of St. Demetrius, built near the Zvečan Fortress. Its history is a mosaic of foreign influences, having been ruled by the Byzantine, Serbian, Bulgarian, and Ottoman Empires. This long history is evidenced by archaeological sites like Fafos, where excavations between 1955 and 1961 revealed Neolithic settlements from the Vinča culture. Today, Mitrovica remains a significant university center, with institutions like the University of Mitrovica "Isa Boletini" operating in the south.
The demographic landscape remains complex. Following the 1999 war, many residents were displaced; for instance, most Serbs previously living on the south bank moved to North Mitrovica. According to 2024 census data, the municipality has 72,662 inhabitants, with 64,742 residing in the south and 7,920 in the north.
