Engineering a crossover for the world's most demanding emerging roads
In short: Most SUVs are designed for smooth highways, but the Mitsubishi Destinator was built for the specific irregularities of Southeast Asian, African, and Latin American terrain. It balances three-row family utility with a suspension retuned to handle unpredictable road conditions, proving that practical engineering can be both rugged and refined.
The Mitsubishi Destinator entered the market in 2025 as a compact crossover SUV specifically targeting emerging markets. Its development was rooted in the 'Gravitas and Dynamism' design concept, aiming to empower families to explore new destinations. The production model evolved from the DST Concept, first unveiled in October 2024 at the Philippines International Motor Show. It retains key aesthetic markers like the Dynamic Shield front fascia and a hexagonal rear motif inspired by the spare tires of the classic Pajero.
Technically, the vehicle is engineered for versatility and durability. It is powered by a 1.5-litre 4B40 MIVEC turbocharged petrol engine producing 120 kW (161 hp), utilizing an Atkinson combustion cycle and a water-cooled intercooler. To manage power, it uses a continuously variable transmission with a front-wheel drive system. For safety and handling, it includes Active Yaw Control, five selectable drive modes, and a suspension setup featuring MacPherson struts in the front and a torsion beam in the rear, which was specifically retuned for Southeast Asian roads.
The Destinator prioritizes geometry for off-road capability, boasting a ground clearance of 244 mm (9.6 inches) without an undercover, along with a 21° approach angle and a 25.5° departure angle. Inside, it accommodates three rows of seating with split-folding configurations (40/20/40 for the second row and 50/50 for the third). It also features a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, often branded as 'Diamond Sense' in Indonesia, and earned a five-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP in October 2025.
