The SUV inspired by a Greek temple and Mercedes-Benz engineering
In short: The SsangYong Rexton is a study in industrial pragmatism. From its roots in licensed Mercedes-Benz engines to a design inspired by the Parthenon, this South Korean flagship has spent decades balancing heavy-duty capability with sophisticated European engineering standards.
The Rexton first debuted in late 2001, with its name derived from the Latin 'rex' and the English 'tone' to signify 'the ruler's tone.' Its first generation (Y200) featured styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio. A key technical hallmark of its early years was the use of licensed Mercedes-Benz components; for instance, the 2.7-liter XDi diesel engine was based on the Mercedes-Benz OM612 CDI, and the vehicle initially utilized transmissions from American company Tremec and Australian company BTR Automotive. The vehicle's evolution reflects a shift toward independent engineering and global expansion. By 2017, the second-generation Rexton debuted on a new body-on-frame platform shared with the Musso pick-up, utilizing Advanced High Strength Steel. This generation introduced a 2.0L petrol turbo and a 2.2L diesel engine, paired with Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic or Aisin 6-speed transmissions.
It also significantly boosted towing capacity to 3,500 kg and integrated advanced safety suites like Autonomous Emergency Brake Systems and Lane Departure Warnings. The Rexton has also served as a cornerstone for international partnerships. In 2012, it became the first facelift model under the Mahindra & Mahindra subsidiary. This led to the creation of the Alturas G4, a rebadged version assembled in India between 2018 and 2022. Even though it secured the 'Best Value 4x4' title for six straight years up to 2023, the brand's premier vehicle ceased production in late 2022 because of weak marketing and sales figures.
