How a powerhouse program produced four Pro Football Hall of Famers
In short: Jackson State University is a perennial powerhouse among HBCUs, boasting a legacy that few college programs can match. Beyond the stadium lights, the Tigers have shaped professional football history, producing a roster of legends and driving significant economic impact through their storied athletic culture.
The Jackson State Tigers, competing in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, have established themselves as a dominant force in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Since joining the SWAC in 1958, the program has secured 19 conference titles, accounting for approximately 25 percent of the conference's championships. The program reached its peak of success during the 1980s under head coach W. C. Gorden, who led the Tigers to eight conference championships between 1980 and 1990, including a streak of four consecutive titles from 1985 to 1988.
The Tigers' influence extends deep into the professional ranks. The program has produced 101 professional football players, including four inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Lem Barney, Walter Payton, Robert Brazile, and Jackie Slater. Just 13 college football programs have yielded a greater total of Pro Football Hall of Famers. Additionally, the program has seen 16 players selected for the Pro Bowl.
The impact of the Tigers is felt both socially and economically. In 2021, the football program was responsible for a $30 million positive economic impact on the Jackson economy. On the field, the program has been named a black college national champion five times. The team's home, the 60,492-seat Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium—affectionately known as "The Vet"—has been the program's base since 1970 and was once the largest stadium in Mississippi until 2016.
The school keeps shattering limits, such as in 2023 when Leilani Armenta, a placekicker, scored as the initial woman in an HBCU Division I match. While the Tigers have faced challenges in the postseason, having a 0–12 record in 12 I-AA/FCS playoff appearances, their cultural significance and fan support remain unmatched, with the team leading the Division I FCS in attendance for multiple seasons.
